AltairAltair Engineering Inc., a leading global provider of technology and services, has announced that CSI S.p.A. — one of Europe’s leading suppliers of testing, engineering development support, and certification services — has added Altair’s HyperWorks simulation platform to its automotive product development process. CSI’s recently expanded Automotive Department will use the HyperWorks computer-aided engineering (CAE) technology suite to increase its focus on virtual and performance engineering. The company plans to improve its entire development cycle by creating a close relationship between simulation and physical testing.

WiMAXAlcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Clearwire, Intel Corporation, Samsung Electronics and Sprint have formed the Open Patent Alliance (OPA) to promote adoption and deployment of WiMAX technology and products. WiMAX, which is based on the IEEE 802.16e standard, is a 4G, IP-based broadband wireless technology that provides low-cost, multi-megabit speed and greater throughput for the mobile Internet era of video-rich content and bandwidth-intensive applications. To help ensure product differentiation and interoperability at a more predictable cost, OPA’s WiMAX patent pool will focus on providing a more competitive royalty structure by charging only for the features required to develop WiMAX products.

Playstation 3According to data released Thursday by the NPD Group research firm, Sony has sold more than 405,000 PlayStation 3s in the U.S. in June, driven by the launch of “Metal Gear Solid 4.” Nintendo, meanwhile, posted another monthly home console win, selling 666,700 units of its Wii console in the U.S., according to the NPD data. Microsoft Inc. came in third for the month among the current-generation home consoles.
